by Rochelle

I am wheelchair bound (due to Muscular Dystrophy) I have limited movement and watch what I eat. I have tried diet pills, Nutri System among other things. Can you suggest anything for me to lose weight?

Wheelchair and Weight Loss

I kind of understand your pain. I twisted my knee and most doctors said it was worse than breaking it because I was on crutches and could not do any exercise that involved using the lower part of my body.

I know this is not exactly your situation but somewhat similar. I had to lose weight without exercising my lower body.

Seems impossible I know but I started the Atkins Diet. It is a low carb high protein and fat diet. I did not exercise at all the first four months I was on the diet and lost 35 pounds.

I found forums on line and became part of a support group. One of the members suggested that I use hand weights for my upper body because muscle burns faster. I hope this helps. If you would like more information leave your information and I will email it to you.

Good Luck. It is possible to lose weight and be confined to a wheel chair. I would also consult your doctor before you start this diet.

Swimming and healthy eating are the way to go

As you have already figured out, losing weight without exercise can be a huge challenge - but it is not impossible.

What is important in weight loss is using more calories than you are taking in. When your mobility is restricted it takes some creativity to find the right balance.

First, what kind of physical activities can you perform? Swimming and water aerobics are two fabulous forms of exercise that are well suited to persons with weakness, injuries, or physical disabilities. Classes are often offered at neighborhood pools, health clubs, and even the YMCA. If a class is not available, there are plenty of books, videos, and websites out there with suggestions and exercises that you can do on your own in a swimming pool.

With or without exercise, pay close attention to what you are eating. Some diets work and some don't and you will have to figure this out with experimentation. Always remember, though, to keep things balanced and moderate. A diet high in vegetables and fruit with healthy proteins and moderate amounts of high fiber carbohydrates just can't go wrong if you monitor your portion sizes at every meal and snack.

In the past year I have lost over 100 pounds just by following these guidelines with exercise playing a very small role in my health plan. I know you can do it to.

Best of luck to you!

Don't need the jelly belly
by: Laura

I have cerebral palsy and epilepsy. I have had the mobility to stay active and mobile until 2002 when I became anemic. Now the only if at all mobility I have is transferring.
I live in an apartment for the physically challenge yet they don't provide us with activities that would improve our livelihood.
I have tried some sitting exercises but came with no results for the last two months. What can I do to lose the belly fat?
