Lose Weight Drinking Water -- Water For Weight Loss
Fact or fiction? Can you lose weight drinking water? Or is that just weight loss fiction?
Some "experts" say that you don't need more water. That you can just drink when you're thirsty. They say that you can get your water from other drinks, like coffee and soda. Or you can get enough water from food. So which is it? Can you really
lose extra weight drinking water?
Drink water and lose weightWhat happens when you drink more water? Do you lose weight drinking water or not? Researchers in Oakland, California looked at 173 overweight women. They evaluated them for a year. And they found that when they drank more water they lost more weight. And they also found -- and this is key -- that it wasn't related to what
exercise program
they did. Or what they ate. Or how much they ate. Or what else they drank. It was just that simple. More water equals more weight loss. Now, how's that for good news? (Obesity (Silver Spring). 2008 Nov;16(11):2481-8. Drinking water is associated with weight loss in overweight dieting women independent of diet and activity.)
"Many of life's circumstances are created by three basic choices: the disciplines you choose to keep, the people you choose to be with; and, the laws you choose to obey."

Boost your metabolismSo why does it work? How does it
jump start your metabolism?
Good questions, right? Researchers in Germany and Canada wanted to know about water and metabolism. So they tested seven men and seven women after drinking 1/2 liter of water. They found that their
metabolic rate
-- that's the speed your body burns up calories and FAT! -- went up by 30%. The effect started in 10 minutes and peaked in 30-40 minutes. That's what I call free and easy weight loss! Lose weight drinking water. No exercise. No dieting. Nothing. (The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 88, No. 12 6015-6019; Water-Induced Thermogenesis)

Soda and weight lossWell, you say you don't like water. What about drinking soda instead? Researchers at the Oakland Research Institute wanted to know what happens when you replace sugary soda drinks, like Coke and Sprite, with water. They tested 118 overweight women. When they drank water instead of soda they took in 200 fewer calories per day. You might think they'd just eat more food to make up the difference. But they didn't. They also say -- pay attention here, because this is important -- that it doesn't work
if you drink diet soda.
Because if you drink diet soda you DO eat more food to make up the difference. It only works with water. (Obesity (Silver Spring). 2007 Dec;15(12):3013-22 Replacing sweetened caloric beverages with drinking water is associated with lower energy intake.)
Doing what worksI say do what works. Weight loss is hard enough. You should make sure you do what's easy. This one is like they say -- a "no brainer." It works. It's easy. Just
find out how much you really need.
And then make sure to get it. So drink some extra water -- and lose some extra pounds. OK?
