Eating a healthy breakfast

  • Do you skip breakfast? That can be a problem for those of us with weight trouble.
  • In fact, skipping breakfast or just eating the wrong things for breakfast might be the major barrier to you getting to a weight where you are happy.
  • Is this you: "I'm just not hungry in the morning."
  • Or, "I don't have time. I'm rushing. The kids. Work."
  • And a lot of us, when we do take the time to eat something, often make bad choices.
  • Like coffee and doughnuts.
  • Or sugary breakfast cereal. Like Frosted Flakes. Sugar Smacks. Cocoa puffs.
  • Want to look better and feel better? Let's look at some simple things you can do.

Breakfast nutrition and weight loss

If you want to lose weight, and if you want to help your kids from being overweight, you need to choose foods with better nutrition and fewer calories.

And that includes fewer sugary foods and more foods rich in vitamins, nutrients, fiber and protein.

And the time to start getting better nutrition is at breakfast.

Don't sacrifice a good start to the day. Make sure you and your kids fuel your day with good nutrition.

"In the childhood memories of every good cook, there's a large kitchen, a warm stove, a simmering pot and a mom."

Barbara Costikyan

Cold cereal for breakfast

How about cold cereals? They're appealing. Quick. Easy. And they taste good.

Just one problem. Regarding nutrition, most breakfast cereals, the kind you eat cold with milk, are awful. They're not healthy breakfast cereal. They're pure sugar.

Don't think so? Read the label. They don't have enough protein to support an active metabolism. And they're not what you want to feed your kids if you want to avoid obesity in young children.

Sugar, sugar and more sugar

Most breakfast cereals have something like 6 times as much carbohydrate as they do protein.

For example a cup of Cheerios has 3 grams of protein and 22 grams of carbohydrate. Kellogg's Raisin Bran has 5 grams of protein and 46 grams of carbohydrate. That's pure sugar.

If you like breakfast cereal, at least get the whole grain kind. And skip the sugar coated cereals.

"Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."

Old-fashioned breakfast

In the old days oatmeal was breakfast cereal. Oatmeal with a little milk and maybe some scrambled eggs makes a complete breakfast.

Oatmeal is the kind of "stick to your ribs" food that will get you through your day.

If you're rushed you can use the instant kind. But you can actually cook up a pot in advance and store it in the refrigerator. If you scoop some into a bowl and pop it in the microwave it's quick. It's lumpy but delicious.

With practice you can have your microwaved oatmeal and some eggs on the table in three minutes.

The best breakfast cereal

By the way, if you really want a healthy breakfast cereal you should try Hi-Low Cereal.

It's made by a company called Nutritious Living. It's usually found in health food stores, or you can buy it online.

Hi-Low Cereal has 24 grams of protein and 26 grams of carbohydrate in one cup. That is a world of difference from the usual cold cereal.

Hi-Low Cereal tastes different than other cereals. Natural flavors always taste different than sugary and artificially flavored food. But once you adjust to this healthy breakfast cereal, it is delicious.
