by Priyamvada Kukade
(Pune, India)

I am from India and 24 years old. I have problem of belly fat. I don't go to gym but I do walk early in the morning for 2-3 kilometer. But I am not getting any result.

My weight goes down 1-2 kg and then it bounces back from that point. Also, I have extra fat on belly. Whenever I try to increase my exercise my energy level goes down and I need to stop it.

I am not too strict in diet but I am avoiding sweets, fast food and oily thing.

Can you give me any advise how to reduce weight in healthy way? And what to do to reduce belly fat? Shall I do any change in diet?
Thanks in advance.

What to do about belly fat
by: Dr. Dan

Priyamvada,

Wouldn't it be nice if we all had naturally slim, muscular bodies with no belly fat? But that's not the way it is.

I think it's time for you to actually take a good look at what you are eating. Before you can solve a problem you have to know what the problem is.

You say you are not too strict in your diet. Did you know that most people gain weight because they eat a little more than they need -- just a little -- over a long period of time. And it just builds up.

If you keep a food diary you'll soon know whether your diet is a problem or not. And then you can start to do something about it.

Good luck!

If you get too tired for normal life when you are just walking, when it's to the point you have to quit, then there is something wrong. Get a thorough check up and blood test.

If all is well there then look at your diet. You probably need more protein for quick energy before a walk or run and complex carbs for lasting energy.

Also the only way to reduce and tone your belly is to do sit ups. It is not fun or pleasant but it is the only way. Walking works out your legs. If you need to tone your belly then you need to work out your belly. Do sit ups.

Exercise!
by: Sarah

Hi Priyamvada!

I have to disagree with the person who suggested to do sit up after sit up to decrease belly fat. I also had this problem -- and to the extreme. The rest of my body was slender with all my weight problem being in the stomach. At a friend's advice I did sit ups, crunches, this ab machine, that ab machine -- you know the drill. None of it worked at removing the fat. All those exercises will do is build the muscles that are below the fat. You first need to do A LOT of aerobic type exercises. The walking is a good start, but make sure you get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day. Walk at a fast pace or try a slow jog. When you start seeing a decrease in the actual fat then start with the crunches to tighten the muscles and also help the skin to stay firm in this area. Drink lots of water and make sure to eat healthy!

Healthy Carbs
by: Laurie

I know everyone is always saying to completely cut out carbs but I think that is unrealistic. But I do find that cutting out UNHEALTHY carbs is the only way I lose weight in my stomach. I still eat whole grain bread and brown rice and even fruit. I just cut out anything with added sugar or white-processed flour and I notice the change immediately. When I do eat fruit, I try to eat it on an empty stomach and earlier in the day so I have time to burn it off. The enzymes in raw fruit will also help you digest anything else you consume throughout the day.

Have a common currency :)

I can relate to what you describing, I have experienced the exact situation you mentioned and I know how hard it can be.

What finally did the trick for me was being honest. I thought I was eating pretty good and that I was exercising the right amount - then I decided to write it all down in an accounting ledger book. With entries in the plus and minus column for the food I ate and the exercise I did. I converted all the entrees to a common currency - calories. I quickly saw I had an imbalance in the flow of calories. Basically, I was eating way more than I was burning.

I know this sounds like a lot of work but basically anything worth investing in will require some work. And you are worth the investment!!!

I would recommend looking up the calories for your weekly diet and figuring out how many calories you burn with walking and your other favorite activities - and write it all down so you can analyze your progress.

Provided that you are a healthy lady without any gut problems or hormone ones then you should follow 3 steps:

1.exercise your abdominals with crunches (lower/up and side crunches) 3 sets of 15 repetitions per each exercise..that is all..3 days a week..ask a trainer to show you the exercises..aerobic for 30/40 min 3 times a week

2.diet-watch what you are eating and how do you combine foods.. you should eat 3-4 small servings per day every two/three hours..starting with a very good breakfast, three hrs later a toast or fruits or salad then a small dish for lunch(carbo-energy resource- with protein). In the afternoon do your workout(ab crunches)and aerobic for 30/40 min. Dinner(vegetables boiled or raw with protein) should be eaten early in the evening..Watch if dairy products bloat your belly. If yes avoid them (milk) try the lactose free milk or goat milk or substitute with yogurt. Check if the green salad bloats your belly. If yes, then eat boiled or roast veggies.

Do not forget to drink a lot of water..avoid any gas beverages.

3.do not be stressed..

above steps helped me..good luck

Maintain a strict diet + Excercise.

Well the best way to reduce your belly fat is to do a combination of a very strict diet and also good exercise. Well the diet should be maintained at a very strict level. Since you are Indian, and Indian foods are generally very spicy and contain a lot of oil, you should be very careful in maintaining a diet. Cut down all oily foods. I mean cut and not avoid. Do not compensate your diet on weekends. Lots of people skip diet and exercise on weekends as they consider it a "relaxation day". Oily foods include everything from milkshakes, milk products, fried stuff, etc. I reduced 5 kilos in 3 weeks. And to reduce your belly fat, the only way is exercise. Refer online abs workouts or magazines. It really helps.

Belly Fat

I too have struggled for years with belly fat that I cannot seem to lose no matter what! My problem seemed to worsen after the birth of my second child at almost 30.

Ive tried Relacore, Zantrex 3, and several other popular weight loss supplements but always to no avail. I have a hard time with sit-ups since an emergency surgery in 2006.

I absolutely swear by crunches and swimming. I lost 22 lbs in 4 months last year simply by doing 100 crunches a day and swimming laps in the pool. I didn't change my diet a whole lot with the exception of cutting out all eating after 6 p.m.

My mother lost quite a bit on the Adkins diet but not her belly fat. I have found that swimming for me tightens and tones my body up as I lose the pounds, so I'm not left with a lot of excess skin when I'm finished dieting.

Diet management + exercise
by: shantanu ghosh

Hi, not everyone is blessed with a body which is naturally slim. Some of us have to work really hard to maintain our body to the shape we desire.

A combination of exercise and diet will help you stay fit and also look good. You do not have to conform to a particular shape to be healthy, but you have to eat right and exercise in the right proportion.

Start your exercises slowly and persevere. Right now you might feel weak after exercise, but soon you will start to enjoy it and actually feel refreshed after even a very strenuous exercise regime. Pick a sport or an activity you like doing for exercise. Also, plan for rest days in between your exercise days.

Closely monitor your diet and build a diet chart. Have 5 small meals a day and avoid sugar and salt. Design a diet which is nutritious and low in saturated fat. The combination of the above should make you lose your belly. Best of luck!

Good Diet Will help
by: Usha

Hi,

I followed a complete Veg&Fruit diet and normal exercise and I see the belly is reduced greatly.

Try this Diet Menu and continue with normal exercises.

The daily menu of a health-building and vitalizing diet should be like below:

Upon arising :- A glass of lukewarm water mixed with the juice of a half a lemon and a teaspoon of honey, or a glass of freshly squeezed juice of any available seasonable fruit such as apple, pineapple, orange, sweet lime and grapes.

Breakfast :- Fresh fruits such as apple, orange, banana, grapes, or any available seasonal
fruits, a cup of butter-milk or unpasteurized milk and a handful of raw nuts or a couple of
tablespoons of sunflower and pumpkin seeds.

Mid-morning snack : One apple or a banana or any other fruit.

Lunch : A bowl of freshly prepared steamed vegetables using salt, vegetable oil and butter for seasoning, one or two slices of whole grain bread or chapatis (chapatis are a type of Indian flatbread) and a glass of butter-milk.
Mid-afternoon : A glass of fresh fruit or vegetable juice or any available fruit.

Dinner : A large bowl of fresh salad made up of green vegetables, such as tomatoes, carrot,
cabbage, cucumber, red beet and onion with lime juice dressing, any available sprouts such as
alfalfa seeds, and mung beans, a warm vegetable course, if desired, one tablespoon of fresh
butter, cottage cheese or a glass of butter-milk.

The above menu is a general outline around which an individual diet can be built. It can be
modified and changed to adopt to specific requirements and conditions. The menu for lunch and dinner is interchangeable.

Do not drink liquids with meals. The water should be taken half an hour before meals or an hour after meals. Milk, buttermilk, and vegetable soups are foods and can be taken with meals.

Thanks
Usha.
